Sometimes traditional orthodontics (metal braces and removable aligners) alone cannot treat advanced cases of jaw issues, which involve a misaligned bite, deformities of the mouth or jaw, and malocclusion (extreme overbites). One or more of these issues can cause the chin to protrude or the jaw to become off-set, causing both cosmetic flaws and functional difficulties. Dr. Husam Elias is experienced in performing corrective jaw surgery (also referred to as simple jaw or orthognathic surgery) to fix these issues and restore your oral well-being. What Happens During Corrective Jaw Surgery?
To help create your treatment plan, Dr. Elias will start with a comprehensive examination. He will take x-rays of your mouth to ascertain what surgical techniques will work. Your surgery will be performed under general anesthesia at our ambulatory surgery center. This operation may take several hours to complete as it involves the manipulation of cartilage and bone. In most cases, minor incisions will be produced inside your mouth so that you will not have any visible scars. Dr. Elias will make cuts in your jawbone so that the pieces may be adjusted to the right position. He will then utilize surgical screws, plates, and wires to hold your jaw in its place. Bone grafts may also be needed to improve your jaw.
Following your jaw surgery, you will need someone to take you home. Dr. Elias recommends that you take around 1 – 3 weeks to rest and heal before returning to work or school. Before your treatment begins, Dr. Elias will go over aftercare instructions, including pain medication, diet restrictions, and the best way to clean your mouth. It's also advisable to plan follow-up appointments before your operation, which will allow Dr. Elias to assess your progress. In case you encounter any symptoms of infection, please contact us right away. Your jaw will probably need about three months to fully heal. Afterward, your orthodontic treatment may be initiated.
