What is the Bone Grafting Process?
You may have a weak jawbone if you have oral conditions, like gum disease, or if you had a physical trauma to your face. The jawbone may begin to atrophy if a tooth was missing, and it was either untreated or replaced with removable dentures or a cemented bridge. Bone graft surgery rebuilds the jaw so it can support a dental implant; however, you'll need to be patient with the process. Some procedures can take months to heal, but you will have a stronger, healthier jaw that will not only support your dental implant but also your natural teeth to give you a healthier mouth.
The process of bone grafting surgery will vary based on where the graft comes from and the amount of grafting needed. Your bone graft may be taken from one area of your body, such as your chin, shin, or hip, which is called an autograft. This may be completed in our office with local anesthesia and sedation or in a surgical facility using general anesthesia. Additional graft sources include an allograft that uses bone harvested from another person. A xenograft bone graft is taken from an animal, typically a cow. Another option is a synthetic bone graft known as an alloplast. In your consultative appointment, Dr. Elias will explain your grafting options and help you select the best method.
As soon as the bone graft is ready, Dr. Elias will numb the areas being treated and place an incision through the gum tissue to expose the jawbone. The bone graft will be affixed to your bone with proteins and collagen that stimulate growth in the graft. The incision will be sutured closed and the mouth will be cleaned. In the following 6 – 9 months, the graft should heal into your jawbone, a process known as osseointegration. Within this time, it's important to follow a proper oral care routine with brushing and flossing, plus any additional products recommended by Dr. Elias. He may write a prescription for pain medication or antibiotics for any inflammation or discomfort after the bone graft. You may have follow-up appointments at The Pacific Coast Center for Oral, Facial & Cosmetic Surgery to check your healing and to determine when your jawbone is strong enough for a dental implant.
