What Happens During Laser Skin Resurfacing?
There are three kinds of laser skin resurfacing treatments that are chosen based on the condition of your skin. Some are performed for milder cases of skin damage while others are more aggressive:
- Ablative Laser Treatments
Ablative lasers eliminate thin skin layers, like dermabrasion or a deep chemical peel, with a high level of control that permits the technician to reduce skin damage. Ablative lasers are ideal for tightening skin, as well as removing wrinkles and acne scars. - Non-Ablative Laser Treatments
Non-ablative laser treatments don't remove any skin — the laser light simply makes micro-injuries to the skin cells to prompt the body's natural healing response. Non-ablative treatments are great for minimizing wrinkles and fine lines on those who are willing to wait 2 – 3 months for strong results. - Fractional Laser Treatments
Fractional laser treatments are a combination of non-ablative and ablative that create micro-damage in the deeper layers of the skin. The body's self-healing process creates tighter skin. Fractional laser treatments can also be used for fine lines, acne scarring, sun damage, and pigmentation issues.
You may be given a topical retinoid for 2 – 3 weeks before your laser appointment to prepare the skin for better results. Medication will be suggested prior to the treatment to help lessen any anxiety or discomfort during your session. If your complexion needs mild correction, local anesthesia will be applied to numb treated areas. Sedation may be required for more advanced procedures. During your treatment, you will relax in a special chair while the laser handpiece glides over the skin, directly targeting the areas needing rejuvenation. You may feel the heat from the laser, followed by cold air from the system's built-in cooling system. The laser is designed to destroy dead and damaged skin cells while promoting collagen production.
An ointment will be applied to the skin after less aggressive treatments so you can go home to recover. Your skin may look pink and swollen, and it may feel irritated for a couple of days. The treated areas will peel over a 3 – 5-day period (recovery from deeper treatments takes longer). In the case of deep treatments, medication can be prescribed to deal with irritation and swelling. It may take 2 – 3 weeks to fully recover from a deep treatment. You should avoid sun exposure as you heal. Once the peeling process is done, your skin should feel softer and look brighter.
