What Happens During Lip Augmentation?
The approach taken during the procedure will vary, depending on the chosen course of treatment:
- Lip Implants
A thin incision is created in the corner of the mouth so the lip implant(s) can be inserted. It can take a few weeks for the implant(s) to settle into its final position and any swelling to subside; however, lip implants will give you improvements that last for a long time. - Fat Transfer
First, liposuction will extract fat from an area with unwanted fat. The extracted fat will be cleaned and injected into your lips until the desired fullness is reached. Since a portion of fat is usually reabsorbed in time, the lips may be filled a little more to account for this eventual loss. Lip enhancement with a fat transfer may be done multiple times to enhance or sustain your appearance, but generally, your results will last for many years. - Lip Lift/Vermilion Advancement
During this surgical lip enhancement, a thin incision is made along the upper and/or lower border of the lip. A small area of skin outside the lips will be removed so the lips can be adjusted to cover the excised skin and stitched in place. This lip advancement surgery creates long-lasting results that improve the size and shape of the mouth. - Dermal Fillers
Nonsurgical lip enhancement may be achieved with injectable dermal fillers, such as Restylane® or JUVÉDERM®. Injections can be done in one of our treatment rooms as an outpatient procedure. Based on the brand of dermal filler selected, a local anesthetic may be included in the formula or numbing cream can be applied on the lips before the treatment. Once your lips have been cleaned, multiple quick injections will be administered in the needed areas of the lips and then the filler will be massaged to create better results. You will be able to leave immediately after your procedure to resume your daily routine.
It's important to follow all recovery instructions to have optimal healing and results. After either a surgical or nonsurgical lip enhancement, your mouth will most likely be tender or sore for a few days. With a fat transfer, you should expect the liposuctioned area to be sore as well. Ice packs and nonprescription pain medications are recommended to alleviate any swelling and discomfort. The results of a dermal filler may be visible for around 3 – 12 months based on the injectable chosen for your treatment. Surgical lip augmentation will provide lasting results; however, natural aging will continue and may impact your results in time.
