Complete or partial removable dentures need pastes and adhesives to remain in your mouth, but implanted dentures are connected to titanium posts in your jawbone in order to be secure and stable. What to Expect with Implant-Supported Dentures
Unlike removable dentures, implant-supported dentures do not need adhesives or soaking. Implanted dentures have fewer restrictions than removable dentures, and they can be treated like your natural teeth. The dental implant replaces the natural tooth root so your jawbone and gums are less likely to become weak. During your appointment, Dr. Elias will examine the current condition of your mouth to determine if your jawbone and gums are able to bond with the dental implants. If needed, bone and/or gum graft surgery can be performed to strengthen specific areas before implant surgery.
Local anesthesia will be administered to numb your mouth before the procedure. Sedation options may be considered if the process will be extensive or if it helps you feel more comfortable. Dr. Elias will make surgical incisions in your gums and place posts in the holes in the jawbone. For dentures, at least four implants are used for each arch. The incisions will be stitched with some of the implanted posts remaining above the gums. The implants will be protected by a temporary denture as your mouth heals in 4 – 6 months. The implants will integrate with your jawbone and gums. Once Dr. Elias feels the dental implants are strong enough, your custom dentures will be attached to the implants and fitted.
Implant-supported dentures should be cared for just like natural teeth with daily brushing and flossing. You should go to regular cleanings and exams at The Pacific Coast Center for Oral, Facial & Cosmetic Surgery to have the wear and fit of your dentures and implants checked. If you properly care for them, implant-supported dentures can last several years. Dr. Elias can help you decide when your implants or dentures need to be repaired or replaced.
