The Many Benefits of All-on-4 Implants

New Smile, who's this?

Are you missing teeth, which makes smiling and eating a chore? It used to be that only dentures or bridges could replace missing teeth. They did a decent job, but these appliances can move in your mouth, causing embarrassment and difficulty speaking.

Today, we have All-on-4® dental implants, an innovative treatment that looks and feels just like your natural teeth. Here at The Pacific Coast Center for Oral, Facial & Cosmetic Surgery, our expert team offers this advanced approach to missing teeth. Here’s why.

How missing teeth affect your oral health

Each tooth has a crown, the part you see, and a root, the part below the gum that anchors your tooth to your jawbone. Each time you chew, the pressure stimulates tissue growth in your jawbone, which keeps your bone tissue strong and your teeth firmly in place.

When a tooth falls out, your remaining teeth can shift and loosen and your gums can recede. Without the tooth root in that spot stimulating the bone tissue, your jawbone can shrink, causing your face to lose its natural shape. Missing teeth can also contribute to gum disease and other oral health problems.

Dentures and bridges are temporary solutions that fill in the gaps left by teeth gone AWOL. But these removable appliances don’t preserve your jawbone. Plus, dentures can slip, and bridges can compromise surrounding teeth.

What is All-on-4 implant reconstruction?

First, here’s a look at dental implants. A dental implant mimics your natural tooth. It has a crown and an artificial titanium root that is surgically embedded into your jaw bone. If you have one or two missing teeth, a dental implant in place of each tooth can restore your smile.

However, if you have many missing teeth, replacing each one with an implant is a lengthy and costly process. Enter All-on-4 dental implants, which can replace an entire upper or lower arch of teeth with just four metal roots.

What to expect during your All-on-4 treatment

First, your oral surgeon administers anesthesia, so you’re comfortable when he or she makes a thin incision in your gum tissue. Then, your oral surgeon surgically places the four titanium roots in your jawbone and closes the incisions with stitches. The process takes about 2-½ hours per arch.

Over a few months, your jawbone grows around the titanium roots, anchoring them in place.

When the roots are secure, a replacement arch of teeth is secured to the implants to keep the dentures in place.
